THE BACKPACK CARE-KIT PROJECT IN PRESCOTT 2016

The Backpack Care-Kit Project:
This year the Girls G.O.T. Prescott (Women Entrepreneurs) Meetup Group is putting together Backpack Care-Kits for the Prescott Area Women's Shelter (PAWS), which is an emergency drop in homeless shelter serving women and children, the family shelter serves whole families, and the Project Aware Inc. Men's Shelter.

Homelessness may seem like a world away for most of us, but in some ways it's quite near. For any of us, the loss of a job, the illness or death of a spouse or a child, or a severe physical disability could be the route to total despair for some. Struck by personal tragedies, people in homeless shelters across America have lost their homes and been deserted by family and friends. I personally found myself suddenly homeless for about a month back in 2004, and my son (age 14 at the time) and his father were also homeless for about 3 months in 2011. It can be quite traumatizing.

Right here in our own community of Prescott there are many people in the midst of homelessness. What can you do to help them? Sometimes the smallest actions can make a big difference. We can each make a positive impact in the lives of the homeless when we respond to them with kindness and respect, rather than ignore or dismiss them. Even just a kind word and a smile can go a long way.

The Backpack Care-Kits are given to homeless individuals when they stay at short term emergency shelters. The essential items in each backpack help to provide a sense of dignity when they are able to take care of basic hygiene needs, plus a book or game to occupy their time, and a notebook to write down their thoughts and or make a plan and write down important contact info.

Though the tendency is to provide for women and young children, the teen and men populations are often overlooked. We want to provide hope for all ages and genders, because all ages and genders who find themselves in a homeless situation are likely experiencing stress and emotional struggles. Our goal is to provide basic essential items to help reduce their stress.
